indexWelcome to the Lagos Yacht Club.
LYC is one of the most unique and rewarding communities in Nigeria.  A place where people experience great sailing and develop life long friendships.

The LYC experience is summarized eloquently by the following observation from a recent Strategic Committee study:

“The LYC is a group of people who enjoy sailing in Lagos and desire a relaxed social atmosphere that is welcoming to our partners and families. We recognize the itinerant nature of many of our membership and want to actively encourage likeminded people to join the club to share in our sailing pursuit and social setting. We desire safe, secure, clean, attractive and efficient facilities to make sailing and social interactions easy.  Facilities and services can be simple and must be cost effective."

The LYC fleet is composed primarily of the Lightning, Tarpon, Hobie 16, GP14, and Osprey classes.  Sailing activities are planned for every weekend and most holidays.  We typically race on Saturday afternoon and cruise on Sunday.  For taking a break from sailing, the LYC has beach hut facilities at two locations available for use by members: one at Ogogoro beach and the other at Tarkwa Bay.

The strong tides and complex currents are what make sailing in Lagos Harbor challenging and fun.  Lagos is blessed with reasonably settled weather and generally light winds.  The prevailing winds are southwesterly, with stronger winds from April to October and the strongest winds being in July and August, blowing above 15 knots or more in the afternoon.

Most racing is conducted within Lagos Harbor with occasional races up Badagry Creek or out on the ocean.  The longest race of the year, the Hermitage Cup, participants travel from LYC via inshore creek to Badagry to the west and back to the club, a round-trip distance of about 140 kms.
